An update on all the other things we are doing
Through 2020 and 2021 when the Centre building itself had to be closed against Covid 19, the staff and local residents in St David’s continued to deliver Our Big Project. Community research volunteers continued online to research their favourite local topics, bringing them back to Todd Gray for encouragement – and judicious editing.
Our Big Project staff carried on tweeting and posting social media local quizzes and competitions along with regular updates on how Our Big Project was going. We set up a Helpline during Covid 19 lockdown with the support of over 150 volunteers and helped with over 500 requests for practical help.
We researched ‘hot spots’ along a newly established ‘St David’s Trail’ around the neighbourhood, with local volunteer residents as Trail Guides telling the stories of the people who once lived here. We held exhibitions of local artists, created a Soundscape of the sounds of St David’s and put our photos in the front windows of the Centre to show that, even if the Centre had to be closed for business during the pandemic, we were still here.
We have now repurposed a large room as a Community Kitchen as we have come to realise the importance of celebrating community, heritage and the diverse cultures we now welcome to the Centre and the neighbourhood through cooking and sharing local food.
And so we move on, creating our own ‘modern history’ in the neighbourhood and building we are proud to call Our Big Project – Our Centre, Our St David’s.
Welcome. Read about us and celebrate with us what communities can achieve when they come together.
